Hi Tony,
Many thanks for the update. I'm glad you managed to get to the Sunderland FHC after all those earlier difficulties.
This thread became so long that I had trouble finding where we had got up to, so I am repeating some of it here:
I wrote on 19/8/2013:
"I think this is where we were up to with the IOM ones:
1841 Maughold census [ages rounded, no relationships given]:
2 10 49 Pt of Ballakilley
Robert CORKILL 30 Iron ore miner Isle of Man
Catharine CORKILL 25 Isle of Man [KERMEEN]
Joseph CORKILL 5 Isle of Man
Robert CORKILL 5 Isle of Man
William CORKILL 2 Isle of Man
Thomas CORKILL 6 m Isle of Man
[Census taken night of June 6th/7th 1841, so Thomas born late Nov./early Dec.1840, and baptised in Maughold Parish Church on 1 Jan 1841, the son of Robert Corkill & Catharine Kermeen.]
1851, Maughold, district 1, schedule 69, Port-e-Vullyn
Robert Corkhill, head, married, 44, iron ore miner, Maughold
Cathrine, wife, married, 38, housekeeper, Maughold
Robert, son, unmarried, 16, labourer at iron ore mines, Maughold
Thomas, son, 9, scholar, Maughold
Dorothy, daughter, 7, scholar, Maughold
Judith, daughter, 4, Maughold
Jane, daughter, 2, Maughold
William Kinnish, lodger, 6 months, Maughold.
[I couldn't find eldest son Joseph in IOM records, who would have been aged about 18 in 1851.]
Robt CORKILL aged 47, Port y Vullin, was buried Maughold 4 Apr 1853.
In the 1861 Maughold census Catherine was recorded as:
1 102 Port E Vullin
Cathe CORKILL Head WID 47 Labourer Maughold
Judith CORKILL Daughter UNM 24 Labourer Maughold
Elizabeth CORKILL Daughter UNM 9 Scholar Maughold
Robert Corkill & Catherine Kermeen married in Maughold 30 Mar 1833.
Their son Joseph had been baptised pre-marriage on 13 Jan 1833.
Their other children were:
Robert [son of] Robert Corkill/ Cath Kermeen [bapt] Parish Church 3 Aug 1834
William [son of] Robert Corkill/ Cath Kermeen Parish Church 20 Nov 1836 [Wm Son of Robt CORKILL buried Feb 8 1838]
William Henry [son of] Robert Corkill/ Cath Kermeen Parish Church 16 Dec 1838
Thomas [son of] Robert Corkill/ Cath Kermeen Parish Church 1 Jan 1841
Dorothy [daur of] Robert Corkill/ Cath Kermeen Parish Church 20 Aug 1843
Judith Ann [daur of] Robert Corkill/ Cath Kermeen Parish Church 20 Sep 1846.
I think this is probably Robert son of William Corkill & Elinor Christian bapt. 14 Sep 1806. [William Corkill & Elinor Christian married in Maughold 16 Dec 1802.]
Mother Cath Kermeen would be Catharine daur of John Kermeen & Jane Corkill bapt Maughold 19 Jun 1814. [John Kermeen & Jane Corkill married in Maughold 18 Dec 1824.]
It would be good to see who were the witnesses at these marriages".
So first question - were you able to order the Maughold par reg copy on film to see the witnesses? The film may take a while to arrive. When they are relatives it can help confirm the families.
Re. what I wrote in 2007 - was it on this board? I've written about a lot of Corkill families, especially from Maughold, and have also made corrections when I found new information. Many Corkills had the same forenames, and there were several couples with the same names having children baptised around the same time, which is especially confusing!
A few years ago I had the wrong ancestors for John Corkill 1736-1798 (not b.1743 - my error) who married Jane Skillicorn - this came up again last Dec./Jan with another long thread about Corkill in Cornwall where many Corkill families were discussed.
William Corkill b.1711 who married Esther Cannell was from the Ard, Maughold, whereas the John Corkill who married Jane Skillicorn was the son of William Corkill d.1742/43 & Barbara Kerruish of Ballagorry Mooar. William predeceased his father when John and his sisters were small children, and John inherited the land from William's father - another John - when he was only 11, in 1747. His grandfather John was entered for Ballagorry (in land records) in 1703.
I have the William Corkill 1779-1855, who was the son of John C & Jane Skillicorn, as married (1800) to Cath Kelly (Wm Corkill aged 77 B'Gorrey bur.16 July 1855).
If that is correct we still need to identify which William Corkill married Elinor Christian in 1802.
The John Corkill who was b.1743 was from the Ards family (above). I'll have to look up these ones again to see whether they could be your ancestors, but you can see why we need to go back one generation at a time and try to confirm each one before moving back to the next. - Especially with Corkills!
