Hi Sue,
Many thanks for your reply. I'm thinking now that Robert Cork(h)ill who married Catharine Kermeen, was indeed my G G Grandfather.
The 1841 census lists the family as= Robert,30, iron ore miner, Catharine, 25, housekeeper , Joseph 5, Robert 5, William 2, Thomas 6m. There were three girls to come, Dorothy, Judith and Jane born 1844, 1847, and 1849, all approximate.
In the 1851 Census there are slight discrepancies in all of the ages although the gap between Robert and Catharine's ages are near enough the same, suggesting that this is the same couple. The three daughters are now listed but Joseph and William are missing.
Thomas turns up in the 1901 Census aged 59 years which suggests he was born around 1842, like it says in the Census. As we usually suspect that all dates are approximate, this is not far away from him being described as '6months' in the 1841 Census.
Now that I believe I am on the right track, I would be very pleased to find any information about this particular Robert Corkhill.
Thanks again, Tony Corkhill (teecee1941)
