I have been trying to trace an ancestor, Margaret Gick born c1807, Malew, IOM.

Family history tells me that Margaret’s maiden name was Gick and that she married twice, firstly to a Carran, then to a Murray.

Various Census documents tend to validate this, including two 1841 IOM Census, one for Margaret, shown as 35 and Charwomen, with a daughter Catherine 12, and a child William Quayle (not sure where he fits in). The other shows a Cath Gick, with children, Esther, 25, John, 20 and Emma Carran 2. This seems to link the families.

I have births for Esther and John, but can’t find Margaret. I also cannot find records for either of her marriages.

I’m pretty sure Margaret’s parents are William Gick and Cath Quine, married 28/11/1807 St. Anne, Santon, with William’s parents being William and Jane Moore!

If this is correct then the IGI has just given me information on Margaret’s mother going back to the mid-1600’s.

I would really like to find more evidence about Margaret before she went to Liverpool in 1841-2. I think she left her children with family on IOM as there is no reference to them in the Murray family records in Liverpool / Birkenhead. I don’t know if she married John Murray in IOM or Liverpool (or somewhere else).
