Incidentally, the name Gick, althoough like many names, there are variations over the centuries of the spelling, is a fairly unusual name, so one would think it would be easy to trace.
When I was in Douglas at the research centre last year, they told me that the name first appears in records in the 17th century.
I wonder where the Gicks came to the island from, and why?
Americans tracing the family appear to come from two lines - one German, and one Manx.
I believe the name has origins in Germany and Scandinavia. If the name, or some earlier spelling could be traced in the island centuries earlier then we could understand it coming from earlier Norse settlement.
It would be interesting to know.
As I have said, the name seems to have disappeared from the island now. Some went over to North America (Canada and USA), some to Australia/New Zealand, and some to England - Cheshire.
