I agree with you on your plan of starting with you family first and working your way back to Robert and Elizabeth Looney.
I have found these bits of information online but a lot of it hasn’t been proven, it just gives a year or (about) abt. 1742 this is where a Birth Certificate or a Baptism is the proof needed.

John (2) Looney was security with Robert Rowland on 17 March 1756 when his sister-in-law, Margaret (Rhea) Looney, administered on the estate of her deceased husband, Robert (2) Looney Jr. on 11 October 1759
It might pay to get both Robert Looney’s Death Certificates 1759 and 1770 and Elizabeth Looney in 1747 this is a very early death seeing as Robert lived until 1770.
