The birth certificate for the male Wood born in West Derby registration district in Q1 1901 should have the mother's name and she is likely to be the informant too. The address of the birth might be helpful. Usually single women would go into the Walton Workhouse of the West Derby Union on Rice Lane Liverpool to have their babies away from gossip and any public embarassment. In some cases the families would make their own provisions to avoid the workhouse and to protect the mother's reputation in public. Hopefully the child was born out of the workhouse as that will give us two clues the mother's name and a private address.
