Hello again,
I see that Sylvia's already given you the other J.Kelly in C'town. What is even odder is that Christian, the 60 year old labourer, is his mother, we presume! I know Malew Street pretty well, as most of my Manx ancestors lived there in various houses! Just next door to the Kellys are William Christian and family. William, my great great great grandfather, was a Painter and Glazier, so it's very likely that he would have given John work in his business. As it happens, my grt grt grandfather James Corrin also had a painting and decorating business for many decades there.
I looked them up in 1851 and found Christian, 74, now working as a Washerwoman, born Arbory and John, 28, now an Ag. Lab. born Castletown. They were still in Malew Street, and also living there, in 31, were John K. 28, Ag Lab, with his wife Ann, 31, also and Ag. Lab! They had John aged 2 and Sophie aged 9.
Around the corner at 23 Mill Street were Robert Kelly, 66, Stone Mason, born Malew, Isabella, 57, born Rushen, John aged 27, Stone Mason and Thomas, 18, a Butcher's Apprentice.
These Kellys were probably related if you were to investigate further and may even be related to one of my ancestors, Catherine Kelly!
Do you have census info for later years, because that would be helpful. If not, I'll have a look for you.
Jo
