I have already found my grandmother Marjorie Crowe on 1911 census living with her adopted parents in Frodsham, so you found the right one.

How do you find out who registered the birth? We ordered my Grandma's birth certificate a while ago and I don't have it to hand, but all I remember from it was Eleanor's name, her occupation etc. Interestingly on the birth certificate I ordered from the GRO in the fathers name section it had the name 'Thomas Shields' but crossed out with the number 10 ringed next to it. I asked the GRO and they said it was more than likely it was just an error when transcribing the details, so probably this is true and means nothing, as on the original birth certificate there is no fathers name.

I've put the story down below about everything we know about Eleanor in case anything else jumps out at you. I don't know if Sarah could be the mother, I thought it was interesting she was working in England as a domestic servant, as I thought perhaps if her older sister went, Eleanor might have also done a similar thing.

Eleanor Crowe, a domestic servant, gave birth to my Grandmother Marjorie Crowe in January 1905 at 13 Back Sea View, Hoylake, Wirral. I have no idea why she went to this lady to give birth, I managed to contact a relative of hers but he knew nothing about it.

The baby was supposedly provided with a large sum of money for her education and some expensive baby clothes.

The baby was apparently advertised for sale in the Liverpool Echo and I think also the Chester Chronicle . She was adopted by the Carringtons, the couple in Frodsham who unfortunately spent her inheritance money and burnt the adoption papers.

In the 40s or 50s my Grandma (Marjorie Crowe, married name Marjorie Lewis) went with her children to see Minnie to find out information about her Mother, Eleanor Crowe. We have no idea how she found out about Minnie Webster, all we can presume is that she found out from her adoptive parents.

Minnie told them that all she knew about Eleanor Crowe was that she was about 16 years old and after the birth planned to go back to the Isle of Man where she was from to live it down! I believe Minnie wouldn't give any more details as she had been sworn to secrecy.
