I’m still fixated on this one which Frances suggested:

This one may be the Mgt Gill who married William Moore in 1845 in Liverpool, outlined in a message 9th Aug.

Recapping what little we know about Margaret Gill, mother of Eliz Sophia Gill:

She gave birth to an illegitimate child who was baptised in Braddan in 1827. Her surname at the time was Gill (birth name or married/widow ?)

She was alive and living in Liverpool in 1854.

And that’s about all we know.

We don’t know whether or not she was Manx, but it seems likely that she was.

We don’t know whether the Robert Gill, butcher, who fathered her child, was or wasn’t Manx, or even whether he ever set foot on Manx soil.

If/when this puzzle is finally solved, I’m going to hazard a guess that it’ll turn out that Margaret was working on the mainland when she discovered that she was pregnant, and that she returned to the IOM for the birth. By 1841, Sophia was old enough to have a job as a live-in servant, so it’s not surprising that Mgt and Sophia weren’t together at census time.

Moving on to the mysterious Robert Gill, butcher, I found a couple of interesting entries:

So I looked in the 1851 census for a Robert and Margaret Gill couple in order to discover whether this Robert was old enough to have been the father of Sophia. But I just can’t find them !

Perhaps someone else might manage to track them down.
