Hi Maureen,
As we know from Sophia's marriage that her father was Robert Gill, butcher, and who can't be found (as yet) in the 1841 census, the Robt Gill of Ramsey b.c.1780, died 1837, appears to be a reasonable possibility. As previously posted, he was a "vict. and cattle dealer" in the 1823 Pigot's Directory. [Manx Notebook]
The best way to find out would be to look at the two Robert Gill wills:
GILL, Robert, 1837, Maughold, E[pis], [number] 1, [LDS film no:] 0106437
GILL, Robert, 1840, Maughold, E[pis], [number] 1, [LDS film no:] 0106440
[BL's wills index]
I don't know whether you have looked at other IOM wills? They are often very informative, with wife, child(ren), and other relatives mentioned. A young child would almost certainly be named, with instructions given for her care.
You can order the wills on film to view at a local LDS Family History Centre, or you may be able to now order scans by email from the Manx Museum - which costs more. Their films are numbered differently, so the above numbers can't be used to give them. Just full name, year, parish, and that they are Episcopal wills.
