In 'A History of Kirk Maughold' Constance Radcliffe (and husband Bill) wrote "...Ewan [Kerruish] established two marriage fashions for later Cardle Vooar Kerruishes - either to marry other Kerruishes, or to marry people from Braddan. (This apparently distant parish is in fact only about four miles from Cardle over the hills)." pp299-300.
She also told me this herself as an explanation as to why my Corteen ancestor Edmond 1725-1761, from Maughold, had apparently moved to Braddan where he married Ellinor Creer of Braddan, and where their children were baptised. Edmond died falling off Douglas Quay (Tom Corteen said probably smuggling). His family owned fishing boats even though they were primarily farmers.
