This is turning out to be a fascinating puzzle. I've been digging around in a Caley family and just might have identified Sophia Gill's friend/relative, Margaret Caley b circa 1830, in the hope that it will throw some light on the name of Sophia's mother. I see from old messages (found by googling) that there was a suggestion that Sophia's mother may have been Margaret Gill alias Scarff. Eric will probably be able to help with this.

Going back to Margaret Caley b 1830, looking for siblings, I used the search facility for Manchester and Liverpool marriages, looking for a Caley whose father was John Caley, cabinet maker. This one came up:

It seems that Cath Caley alias Crellin/Murray died in 1830:

and it's possible that this could have been a death during/following childbirth, which could have been Margaret Caley's birth. Just speculation though, and I can't find a baptism for Margaret in the IGI.

Going with the theory that Margaret Caley's mother had died when Margaret was newborn, perhaps she was brought up by female relatives who could have been the Gellings or the Bridsons or Sophia's family. Eric will be able to tell us who these Gellings are.
