I've been trying to determine parents of a Robert GELLING who married Margaret CRELLIN 7 Dec 1817. They had 9 children John, Robert, Margaret, Jane, Robert, Elizabeth, Edward, Philip, Isabella Charlotte. The last one was bapt 3 Jan 1841 St. George Douglas. It seems Robert must have died before the census because Margaret (with part of her brood) is a Mangler age 40 in 1841 and a Servant Widow age 53 b Douglas in 1851, both at Atholl Court Douglas staying with a Schoolmistress Charlotte COSTAIN. I can't find a burial for Robert Gelling but there are 2 of them in the will index 1841.
The prime candidate for Robert is the 11 Dec 1792 baptism, son of John GELLING & Isabella CAVENDISH.
Robert G's wife, Margaret CRELLIN must be the one baptized 28 May 1797 Douglas, daughter of Philip CRELLIN & Margaret FARGHER, because family members intermingle in the census's. It seems the Crellins had 4 children before Philip C died 1807, and then Margaret married Matthias CHRISTIAN. They are at Clypse, Onchan in 1841 and one of the Gelling children Edward 5 is staying with them. But guess who is right above them in 1841 at Kerradoo Farm? It's Marg's ancestors William Gelling 47 and Margaret (als Quine) 47.
So .... it's circumstantial but it hints that Robert Gelling born probably in the 1790s and William Gelling born abt 1794 could be connected, and they nicely match the 1792 Robert and 1794 William children of John Gelling & Isabella Cavendish.
