Re: Question for Marg Skillicorn re Gelling Wills

Sorry Marg, I wrote that note too fast. I got my wills mixed up, though I think you've got it mixed up too (sorry!). I'll start this again.

The 3rd main paragraph of your note (Aug 13 5:34PM) that starts "When you read the JG - 1829 will, you will see that he mentions John, William, Jane, Ann, Thomas - but not wife ...". First of all, the petition by son Thomas was dated 1822 and John wrote the will in 1821. John G of Ballamillaghyn was still alive for 7 more years after that. I saw that problem when I wrote the note earlier today, but went the wrong direction to a different John 1832. Oops.

But then again, there's a whole lot of serendipity in this. I'm now about 75% sure (and rising) that the 1821 John will be the one baptized 4 Oct 1741 at Marown, son of John G and Ann FAYLE. That makes him a brother of Robert G the Schoolmaster, with the MI's that Donna provided in my last note. He'll also likely be the one who married Margaret CAROON 28 Feb 1767. The IGI provides all the children in the will except the petitioner Thomas, who I can't seem to find. Margaret Gelling als Caroon is buried 1781 soon after the youngest, Anne, is born. I don't know yet if John remarried, but it appears he was a widower and quite old in 1821. One of his witnesses was nearly 80 years old and couldn't travel, which hints that John Sr was also very old.

Going a bit further into your note, you seem so very certain that your ancestor William G (m Margaret QUINE 1816) is the 1794 son of JG and Isabella CAVENDISH. I'm much less certain of that than you are. There is a very good chance instead that he is the 27 Oct 1793 son of Robert GELLING the Schoolmaster and Jane KELLY (m 1780) and so fits right into this same family that I've been talking about. The names of children match the parents quite well, and better than with the other choice. However, the jury is still out.

Re your question about Isabella Gelling making a claim for 200 pounds in the 1822 JG will, I think she will be the widow of son Patrick who died 1819, not mentioned in the will. She was born Isabel Corkill, and as a widow of a dead son, might have some right for a claim. I can't find any children for Patrick and Isabel.

That's all for the moment. There's lots here to ponder over.
