Phillip / Sue.
I've now received copies of two certificates.
The first is my Grandfathers birth certificate. As we previously knew, he was born on 20th June 1908 and christened John Charles Victor Joughin.
His father was Charles Victor Joughin a merchant seaman and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Agnes Joughin (nee. Flood) and they lived at 56 Schubert St. Seaforth, Liverpool.
The second certificate is the marriage certificate for CVJ and MEAJ, although they had shortened their names to just Charles Joughin and Elizabeth Agnes Flood. They were married on 30th January 1908 at the ages of 24 & 23 respectively. His profession was mariner and they were living at 11, Boreland St. Bootle, Liverpool. His father is shown as Charles Joughin a tailor's cutter by profession and her father is Joseph Flood (deceased) but who had previously been a sea-captain.
I have searched further records on the internet and believe that CVJ may be the same person as a Charles Joughin born on 25th July 1881 to a Charles Joughin and Mary Jane Gawne. The age dates from the marriage certificate and the d.o.b do not tally exactly, but CJ seniors profession is shown as tailor on both and there does not seem to be any other references to the specific names. This CJ was born in1860 and at the time of the 1881 census he was married and living with MJG at 15, Hope St. Onchan IOM.
Further searching has shown that CJ and MJG had several other children - Herbert b. 14th August 1882, William b. 24th June 1884, Thomas b.18th July 1886 and Ernest b. 18th January 1890.
I have also found a marriage record for CJ & MJG on the 9th September 1880 at Braddan IOM.
Finally there is also a christening record for MJG for 1st January 1860 in Bride IOM. Her parents were Thomas Gawne and Jane Kenrode and a reference to CJ born about 1860 in Douglas IOM.
From your considerable knowledge and records do you think that I am on the right track here? (The marriage age and birth date for CVJ is troubling me a little!)
If you think that I may be correct and that I may have traced my first ancestor back onto the IOM, do you have any information which would link me back into your records and deeper into my roots.
Any guidance / assistance would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Keith.
