Hi Lois,
This is terrific, many thanks! Yes, I've looked at Frances' site - awesome job, working my way through it! I've also read Thomas Tear's account from 1888 several times. Fascinating!
I do believe that the Philip Tear family in the 1851 New Brunswick is my (and James') family. They do not appear, for whatever reason in subsequent Canadian census records (1861 or 1871). At least I couldn't find them. However, the cemetery records you found, Lois, are brilliant! I also found Philip and some of his family living in a place called Point Wolf, Alma Parish (exactly where Thomas said they lived in his 1888 account) in a 1865-66 New Brunswick directory. The 1851 census, the 1865 directory, and death place are all close in proximity. It's them!
Trying to pull a few loose ends together. As noted before, the only Philip Tear(e) to appear in LDS files born in 1791 in IoM was christened in Lezayre to parents William and Jane Kneale. Could he have been born near Andreas and baptized in Lezayre?? And, as noted, a Philip Tear died in Lezayre in the mid 1800s.
But Thomas' 1888 account has him being the son of John Tear (b about 1760) and Joaney Moore. There IS a Philip Tear born in Andreas to father John and mother Joney Radcliffe, BAPTIZED in 1796. Would they wait so long to baptist him? Or are there two Philip Tears born in two places a few years apart - one stayed in IoM? How did Thomas get Philip's birth year off by 5 years or the parentage? Confused!!
PS, Lois, I remember seeing what you copied from Thomas Tear's 1888 account "Philip Teare was born about 1791 and died June 19, 1871, age 83 years. He married, at Braddan, January 18, 1817 Elinore Caine … etc" but cannot find the full text on Frances' site now. Seems abridged. Where'd you get it or am I just looking at all this too long!!
Many thanks,
Lyle
