Hello Averil,
I went through this in a previous message, including the birth year mistake (1736) the Radcliffes made which confused the Ballagorry Mooar John C with his neighbour the Ards one.
The 1784 will shows John C and family, although I don't think it mentioned Ards, unlike wife Margaret's will, and also son Thomas's one, but the Court found that his son John was not the one who ended up in Cornwall.
It was the plaintiff who said that John Corkill of Penzance was the son of John Corkill of the Ards. - In the second newspaper clipping the court found against him for various reasons (see 9/5/1893).
In a previous message I also went through what the Radcliffes wrote about the families. I followed the Ards family for a couple of years, thinking they were my ones, until I realised my mistake. That William Corkill 1765 will you mention was transcribed by me - written after his eldest son William "perished by sea" (see also Wm jnr's 1760 will), as was Elizabeth Quay's one. I have also put summaries of those later untranscribed Ards wills among these current messages.
I'm not blaming you for not reading them all! - This thread has become unwieldy, and messages are written under the wrong subject headings, but if you read what I've written and still think that Alison's ancestor is the Ards one (which is also what I hoped when I started this thread) I'm more than willing to reconsider! But bear in mind that his discharge papers were produced, and the plaintiff said Cornwall JC joined the navy at the age of 19 in 1792, which doesn't fit the Ards John C's bapt date of 1 July 1770 (1771 was wrong).
