Re: Re Miss Curphey, MANXONIA
In Response To: Re: Re Miss Curphey, MANXONIA ()

Hi Ray,
Margaret Curphey (christened at St. Marks 25.4.1865) was the youngest child of John Curphey and Christiana Davidson. She owned Manxonia in Douglas and died on the 28th November 1944 in Douglas.

John Curphey (b. 1814 Onchan), married Christiana Davidson (b. 10.10.1822 in Ireland, christened 20.10.1822 at St. Marks) on 22.2.1843 in Ireland. He died 18.1.65. Christiana was the daughter of Hugh Davidson and Isabella Gick ( b. 29.11.1801 at Cordeman, St. Marks, died 24.7.1847 in Dublin).

This gives you the Gick connection.

I recall meeting your Aunt Elsie when I was a child. I remember she was a small lady with a bent back and a cheerful disposition. I visited her shoe shop with my mother.

My connection with Margaret Curphey is that her sister was my great-grandmother, Christiana Hughes.

Your Aunt inherited "shop and premises, Church Road, Port St. Mary, adjoining the Golf Links" and also "Cottage and premises, Mount Pleasant Road, Port St. Mary" plus £100 from Margaret Curphey (her Will dated 12.5.44).

Can you clarify your family - Are you related to Edward Newton whose second wife was Isabella Curphey (b. about 1849) - also a daughter of John Curphey?

Looking forward to hearing more! If you would like more family details privately, perhaps you can let me have an e-mail address.

Jean
