Re: Re Miss Curphey, MANXONIA
In Response To: Re: Re Miss Curphey, MANXONIA ()

Thanks Jean,

The Margeret Curphey I have got was born 1866

Father John Curphey, and mother Christian or Christina nee Davidson.

I am not sure of the death date but it was after 1945 as she was known to be alive then and owned the Manxonia Ladies High Class milliners
in Douglas.

My main objective is linking my family to the IOM.

So far I am informed it is via my Great Grandmother Jane Newton (Clarkson) whose mother, my great great grandmother was Isabella and related (daughter ?) to the Glicks of Cordeman IOM Not sure though if her name was Glick, or Kelly,

Margaret Curphey fits in there somewhere.

My Aunty Elsie Newton (unmarried) my fathers sister, was book keeper to Miss Curphey, but als had a shoe shop on Bay Road Port St Mary. She had the shop certaibly in the 1970 -80 as I visited her there. She lived at a cottage on the shore road called 'The Grenea' I think near Kentraugh.

Sadly she is now deceased. In fact all my father's
relatives ar now dead. So there is no one I can
contact.

The closure of the Manxonia in Douglas would be a clue to the date of death of Miss Curphey.

From what I understand she was well known on the island because of her wealth (property), her Costumiers in Victoria Street Douglas, and her huge size,

She would, I was told, make regular visits to her properties driven in a large car by chauffeur, and never get out. Her tenants would come out and doff their caps (so I was told by someone also now dead).

At the time I was not interested in family research, so I did not take notes, or dig for info.

I would like to know who owned the Golf Links Hotel Port St Mary at the time the area was a camp for German Aliens WW2. Yhis could well have been Miss Curphey.

Any information would be helpful Thanks
