I’ve found yet another illegitimate child of Christina Florence, this one born after Annie!
Mabel Weston Wilson the second was baptised 13 September 1905 in Braddan. I wonder what happened to her. I’ll have to see if I can find out.
It was common practice in those days for a new baby to be given the same name as a deceased sibling. William Robert Duff is good example. ‘Weston’ could be a family name (perhaps Christina’s mum’s maiden name) rather than the child’s father’s name. The boys, and maybe this girl too, could have been ‘children of the Empire’ (See the book ‘Empty Cradles’ and/or the film ‘Oranges and Sunshine’) as you suggests but if that’s the case why weren’t Caroline Blanche and Annie also sent abroad?
I think I’ve found the second Mabel in 1911. If I’ve got the right child, she was known as ‘Dolly’ Wilson and like Annie, she was a boarder with a family not related to her who had several other young boarders with them. I’d suggest this is was an early form of fostering aimed at keeping children out of the workhouse. If the boys didn’t die as infants they were probably placed with families too but perhaps known by different names.
The plot thickens!!!!
