Re: KELL(E)Y, SKILLICORN, Lonan 1700s

Hi John,

We seem to have some obscure family connections (last one Taggart). This time probably through John Hogg's illegitimate son Thomas Hogg.

I have been drawing charts to try to see a connection – anywhere – between John Hogg d.1772 and Philip Hogg d.1764, other than their appearances in Lonan land records around the same time in the same area. I wrote the named descendants of Marriot Hogg als Tear in black, and the named descendants of James Hogg in blue. I looked for any sign of James Hogg's two named children having any definite connection with the four siblings in Anne Hogg's will, or vice versa, without success - although the amount of records you have put together is most impressive.

I thought I had finally found a connection between the two when I wondered whether 8) Elizabeth Hogg (James’s daughter) could possibly have lived until 1801? I looked at her will which you transcribed, and saw "I leave and bequeath unto Jane Skillicorn widdow thirty shillings manks being for my cost as I lodgd some time with her..."
This could be my ancestor Jane Skillicorn (as many widows reverted to their maiden names) whose husband John Corkill died in 1798. She was the granddaughter named in William Kelley's 1752 will – the daughter of Margaret Kelly.
That theory collapsed because Elizabeth (in the will) has a brother John Hogg, and Anne's brother John Hogg died in 1772. Unless she was Philip’s daughter Elizabeth.

As many of my ancestors moved between Lonan and Maughold I also had a look at Maughold records after finding a Maryod Hogg there. She married Henery Ellison on 17 Dec 1695
Strangely, Margaret daur of Henry Ellison was bapt in Maughold on 16 Dec 1694
I didn’t find an earlier marriage for him.
Their wills are in German: ELLISON, Marriod 1699-2 German HOG E w 0991715; ELLISON, Henry 1712-2 German E w 0991649.

Maughold baptisms have: Margaret d/o Phillip Hogg 10 Nov 1695; Edward s/o Edward Hogg 20 Aug 1721; Mary d/o Edward Hogg 20 Oct 1723; Phillip s/o Phillip Hogg 14 Nov 1726; Thomas s/o Edward Hogg/Margaret 10 Nov 1728; William s/o Edward Hogg/Margaret 24 Feb 1730/31; Ann d/o Edward Hogg/Margaret 11 Apr 1738; James s/o James Hogg/Ann 4 Mar 1738/39: Margaret d/o Edward Hogg/Margaret 23 Mar 1739/40; Michaell s/o James Hogg/Ann 14 Oct 1740; Philip s/o James Hogg 22 Feb 1746/47 (stopped there).
Maughold burials include Alice HOGG als KIRMEEN Nov 14 1726 whom you mentioned as a wife of Philip’s.
Ann HOGG als CORKAN buried Mar 4 1729; Margt HOGG als TEAR buried Aug 16 1735 (another one!); Margt HOGG als KILLEY buried May 17 1741; Margt FARAGHER als HOG buried Aug 15 1752; Elizabeth KELLEY als HOGG buried Sep 4 1768 (and others).

Phillip Hogg was also mentioned in the Archd will 1695 bk 1 Maughold, of John Kirmeen at Balneskegg.

About Thomas the “brother” in Ann Kelley als Hogg’s will, who wasn’t mentioned in the wills of James Hogg or Marriot Hogg als Tear, it looks as though he might have been estranged from his family. Anne left him 6d which was often a way to ensure that someone couldn’t then claim on a will saying he had been forgotten. If Philip was also her brother, and she didn’t want him in her will, wouldn’t she have also left him 6d?
The admin for Marriot Hogg als Tear was very clear in naming her three living children.

Here are some will summaries from Joyce Oates:
Archd will 1681 Lonan of Donold or Daniel Cowin: sister Bessie Cowin; sis Margret; sister Catharine Cowin; Marriot Hogg; sister Averick Hogg als Quine; pledges are ‘Philip Cowne junior & James Hogg their execrs & Admintr.

Archd will 1685/6 Lonan of James Hogg: wife alive; eldest son James Hogg; son Wm; dau Cath; 3 children Michael Wm & Margret are exec; dau Marriott. Michael & Wm are of age, they and James are overseers of under age children

Archd will 1687 Lonan, of Thomas Fargher, signed 29 Mar 1687: Michael Hogg; Thomas his brother’s son; son[?] William; Joney Cowin; wife Marriot Fargher als Cown

Archd will 1688/9 #32 Lonan of Henry Hogg, dated 29 Dec 1688: dau Alice[?], wife Joney Hogg als Christian

About the place name “Cloch Gear” associated with John Hogg and with his son Philip 1731-1817, this was also connected to the Skillicorns.
In John Skillicorn's will 1799-2 Film 0106799 “he left and bequeathed the Lands he purched from Thos Cowin of Lonnan
(known by the name of the Chlock Coar) to his eldest Son and Heir John…”. This was Jane’s brother John, one of William Kelley’s grandchildren. He married Jane Killey.

Lois has a deed: John Callow deed of gift to Robert Lace 16 April 1849:

"..... certain lands and premises situate in the parish of Lonan which were
granted and passed over in mortgage by John Skillicorn of the said parish
to John Skillicorn for the sum of forty pounds, the sd Deed of Mortgage

and Issabella Fargher, said premises commonly called "Duncushow" [not sure
of this name] being a parcel of Intack land, also a parcel of Quarterland,
