Hi Mary,
I hate to throw a spanner in the works just when you thought you had the family sorted out. You were 100% correct that William the son of Robert Corkill & Mary Clague bapt Maughold 15 Feb 1852 was not the [William] Edward you were looking for, but when I was copying those two 1861 census transcripts for the Maughold Robert & Mary, and for the Lonan Robert & Mary, to send to Lois, I had another look at Edward bapt 1854 from the Maughold family (who Frances mentioned at the beginning of your thread).
What worried me was that your Edward was very consistent through all censuses with his birth year being 1854, which perfectly matched the Maughold Edward's age, and Lonan family William Edward's siblings were too close to his age for his to have been a late baptism (1857). It would be very unusual for someone to make himself three years older in all censuses unless he was marrying under age, or his wife was much older than he was, which wasn't the case with your Edward.
You also wrote that at both marriages (1882 & 1892) Edward gave his father as being Robert Corkill, a farmer.
So I decided to go back to the beginning and check all the family details again. This included listing the Maughold family bapts, which I hadn't done before:
John [son of] Robert Corkill/ Mary Clague [bapt] Parish Church 7 Jul 1844
Robert Robert Corkill/ Mary Clague Parish Church 21 Dec 1845
Thomas Robert Corkill/ Mary Clague Parish Church 31 Oct 1847
James Robert Corkill/ Mary Clague Parish Church 18 Nov 1849
William Robert Corkill/ Mary Parish Church 15 Feb 1852
Margaret Robert Corkill/ Mary Clague Parish Church 1 Jun 1857
Judith Robert Corkill/ Mary Clague Parish Church 23 Jun 1861
- And saw the gap where Edward should have been.
IGI:
name: Edward Corkill
event: Christening
event date: 19 Mar 1854
event place: Lonan, Isle of Man
gender: Male
father: Robert Corkill
mother: Mary Clague
digital folder number: 004497437
name: Mary Anne Corkill
event: Christening
event date: 02 Dec 1855
event place: Lonan, Isle of Man
gender: Female
father: Robert Corkill
mother: Mary Clague
digital folder number: 004497437
So Robert C & Mary Clague spent a few years in Lonan where two of their children were born, but either didn't tell the 1861 census enumerator, or he didn't bother to ask but just wrote Maughold for them all.
I have also checked a lot more, which I'll put in another message.
