When I first listed the possibilities I found, I thought the John living with the Dukes was the best bet, but I also liked the John Henry Cain son of John Cain & Jane Redpath - apart from his giving older ages in censuses when it is usually the other way around. And also his father being John and not Robert (unless his father can be found with a second name Robert in a record). But now that you have said that this John's father was a gardener at Ballabroie that certainly opens up a possibility, as Liz's John Henry was a gardener!
