I'm away from home for a few days. Have laptop with me but no references.
From my database
Robert Caine 1829 Patrick s/o Robert Caine & Christian Faragher I believe it was this Robert but have conflict in my database I can't check out until I get home. If I'm right, the 2nd one might be the carter Robt
or
Robert Caine 1828 Patrick s/o William Caine & Elizabeth Kelly
I only have him in 1841 and 1851 censuses

So John Cowell refers to his daughter, Harriet, by her married surname, and to his granddaughter, Alice, by her married name----and yet he refers to his daughter, Edith Ann, as Cowell. This suggests that Edith hadn't married John Cain, but was living with him as man and wife ----so they could be the couple who married in 1917.
I've found a Robert Cain, an unmarried carter, who could be the father of John Cain, if John was illegitimate, in which case, John could have been known by his mother's surname until his marriage.

This is all speculation, though.
Donna, can you supply info on the Robert Cain who was a carter in 1881, 1891 and 1901 (unmarried, b Patrick circa 1830). Also, the Robert b 1829, son of Robert Cain and Christian Fargher (can he be ruled out--- eg did he marry someone ?)
Is there an MI for this burial ?
