The Rev. John Kelly (1750-1809) was born at Algare, East Baldwin, Braddan. He was educated at the old Douglas Grammar School and graduated at Cambridge. He was tutor to the Marquis of Huntley and later Vicar of Ardleigh and Rector of Copford.
In addition to writing A Practical Grammar of the Antient Gaelic or Language of the Isle of Man, usually called Manx, he compiled a Manx dictionary, a triglot dictionary of Manx, Gaelic and Irish and assisted Philip Moore in translating the Bible into Manx.
His Manx Grammar was published in 1780. The manuscript was sent to the Duke of Atholl, but was lost and not recovered until 1808. In 1859 it was reprinted with minor corrections as the Manx Language Society's Volume II, together with the Rev. William Gill's Editor's Introduction, Life of Dr. Kelly and one of Kelly's sermons.
This version is based on the Manx Language Society's Volume II, less the Life of Dr. Kelly and A Sermon, but with additional corrections and changes to tables and typestyle appropriate to HTML. Links are provided to individual chapters, but as yet only links to footnotes have been provided within the text.
