Hi again Dave
Something similar happened in my family, a child born out of wedlock, registered in Mothers surname, parents marry but child although known by his Fathers name when a child, reverts back to Mothers maiden name in adulthood. It gave me a hard time trying to locate my ancestor for some time. So, what Len means is perhaps Richard Pugh was his Father but not married when William Richard was born so registered in Marthas name but known by his family by his Fathers name. Like my ancestor he may have decided to later go by his Mothers name. It makes it more difficult though if no marriage certificate to establish his Fathers name/occupation. On his marriage certificate my ancestor gave his Fathers first name and used his Mothers surname but the occupation was unusual which helped me - but took me years to sort it all out and for everything to click into place. Hope I have explained that ok!
I cant find a marriage to Amelia Hawkins unfortunately. Do you have access to Ancestry - did you see the William Clucas, timber labourer in 1891 with wife Sarah A born c1867 London? It is an unusual occupation and may be him. Rather than divorce then they may have just separated so he wouldnt be in a position to marry Amelia? I cant find a death of a Sarah A Clucas between 1891-1901. It looks like there may have also been a child in that marriage, a Sarah A Clucas born 1897 and cant find her on 1901 Census and cant see a death registered before 1901 - so will try and explore that avenue to see if I can find anything.
