Sue - without disrepect to anyone I've learnt to be very wary about accepting 17th C transcripts without first having seen the will myself - I'm afraid that the hands (esp as you go just a little back beyond 1680) can be so very different to modern hands and very easily misread esp when it comes to placenames which are seldom repeated in the document (poor microfilms are yet another added complication) - I'm no expert but I feel I've seen a fair amount by now but eg the 1643 composition book (on film) would be a good test of anyone's reading of such hands -it usually defeats me until 3rd reading at best!

The initial (mis)reading by Averil of the minor phrase of a hogg at May next or 18d indicates some of the points but quite interesting in that hogg as a yearling animal takes up a good column in the OED (the full ed of which I've found to be a near essential ref as one goes back beyond 1650) but only gives an 1850s ref to its def use for a lamb but notes that hogg was never found used in Scotland and much of northern england to denote a pig wch would be the modern assumption based on American films etc.
