Ballajora [Ballajorey/Ballajory]

1. 1511 Thomas McCorkell landholder.

In "A History of Kirk Maughold" [1979] the Radcliffes wrote that Corkills had been recorded in Ballajora (farmland) since 1511, and that two separate Corkill families were living in different parts of the land throughout the 1600s "prosperously engaged in sheep-farming", and probably connected by a common ancestor.

The Radcliffes wrote that in 1678 William Woods and his wife Margery Callow being in “extreme povertie” sold Balnasklow “fallen to them by the death of Margery’s brother John” to Phillip Cashin for £5.10. Phill Cassin had married Margaret Woods in 1668, and they both died in 1708.

The Radcliffes wrote that as they had 7 daughters and no sons, they had secured the succession of Ballasloe by making over their lands (half now and half after decease) to their daughter Ann on her marriage to Edward Corkill of Ballajora in 1701. “Edward and Ann in their turn had six daughters, but their only son James [1707-1779] carried on the name.”

When James died 1779 his eldest son Robert, with the consent of his mother and brothers Edward and James sold Ballasloe to youngest son John. The Radcliffes wrote: "According to the deed of sale, John paid £300 (£240 of which was owing on mortgage), a very large sum. While he may have received some capital from his wife Ann Kissag, the arrangement, which is the only one of its kind we have found, must indicate John's willingness to take responsibility for the place, rather than an actual money transaction."

William son of John Corkil & Ann Kissage bapt Parish Church 29 Jun 1781

In the crucial will of eldest son Robert CORKILL B'Sloe buried Dec 12 1807, one of the claims was from “Wm. Corkill & Elinr. his Wife”. [No other William & Elinor Corkills of the right age in Maughold at that time.] Also “John Corkill and William Corkill Brethren to . . . . Robert Corkill of KK Maughold dec’d are sworn in Court in form of Law Guardians and supervisors of his the said Robert Corkill’s Children”. Will: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/LawsonBMD/twill/1808_050.html

Therefore the chances are very good that William youngest brother of Robert Corkill of Ballasloe married 1802 Elinor Christian (possible daur of William Christian/Ellinor Christian bapt 28 Sep 1774, of Ballaterson. Ellinor from Ballure.
Will: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/LawsonBMD/twill/1798_042.html).

7. William youngest son of John Corkil & Ann Kissage bapt Parish Church 29 Jun 1781 married Elinor CHRISTIAN 16 Dec 1802.
Their children bapt in Maughold were:
Elinor 8 Apr 1804
Robert 14 Sep 1806
William 8 Nov.1808
Margaret 13 Oct 1811
Dorothy 31 Jul 1814
Elizabeth 4 Apr 1819.

Dorothy was also the name of one of Robert's children, as were William, Robert, and Elizabeth ("Dorothy" being relatively unusual).
