Lois: (1) Thank you for this new William, whom I cannot yet place. There are a plethora of William Joughins dying in Painesville or thereabouts, revealed by these postings. There is one in 1878 aged 70 (Averil July 21.6:40), clearly William the weaver. There are possibly two in 1883: one in February (yours of July 22. 3:53, William S) and perhaps another in October (Averil July 21. 6:40, aged 43); (yours of July 22. 2:39 of typhoid after marrying Elizabeth). There is also one in 1894 (yours at 3:53). One of these, not the Oct 1883 man, who was too old, will be William baptised at Maughold 1843 Oct 10, elder brother of Thomas E, but without further information, such as an age, we can’t choose between the 1894 and the February 1883, if the latter isn’t a mistake for October.
(2) Daniel and Mary are a valuable find, albeit probably not connected to the other Cuyahoga and Painesville people. There was a Daniel Joughin who married Mary Ann Radcliffe at Andreas 1840 Feb 22. In the 1841 census at Larivane, Andreas, he was a blacksmith aged 25. Thereafter he disappears from the IoM. His wife, Mary Ann became a schoolmistress and was at various addresses in Andreas for the four censuses from 1861 to 1891 (still calling herself married), dying at Eden Cottage in Andreas 1891 May 7. Significantly, she is absent in 1851. Mary Ann was from the line of Radcliffes at Ballaradcliffe, but Daniel has remained unplaced for years. I have tried to make him a relation of the other Ohio Joughins, but none of their Daniels fits. Instead I think he was the one baptised at Bride 1816 April 1, son of Daniel Joughin, weaver, and Catherine Kneale, of the unrelated line from Crosby, Bride. In his 1866 will that man’s father cut off with a shilling each his three surviving children, Daniel, William and Catherine, leaving everything to his wife. A more detailed will might at least have mentioned that his eldest son Daniel was “off this island”. Jane Joughin is a mystery. Her age puts her birth in 1837/8, before the marriage of Daniel and Mary Ann. She does not appear with Mary Ann Joughin in any of the IoM censuses. There does not seem to be a stray Jane Joughin or a stray Jane Radcliffe of that age born in the IoM.
