Sue and Averil, thank you very much for your delving on my behalf. I have made an idiotic mistake here. Thomas James Joughin went to New Zealand, where he promptly disappeared. I was trying to find out what happened to him after that. Ron’s message made me excited with the prospect of finding him in a New Zealand census, part of the Joughin “family” near to the Kayes, which suggested a wife and children. But of course in 1871 he was still at home in Patrick.
Now those NZ cemetery records look interesting. Thomas Joughin landed at Nelson in January 1875. Who knows how far he wandered from there. Are there suitable cemetery records that one might search in the hope of finding him?
Incidentally, although his youngest brother was shown in the 1871 census as Andrew, his name was really Ambrose. Perhaps the enumerator did not believe his ears or eyes.
