there was no 'smuggling' - it was never actually illegal to say Mass on the Island tho in 17th C incoming bishops always asked about popish customs - the 18th C saw priests harassed by intolerant Protestants especially George Moore's brother (much to the annoyance of the Governor) usually for marrying (this was illegal) - the history of Ramsey Parish is on my site (tho there is a much fuller later history on sale at the Church) - numbers couldn't justify building a church but the 1st purpose built Catholic church was opp the Nunnery was built 1814 but there were other priests before this.
