Thank you for your reply. I am sorry I have not replied sooner but I have been to the IOM and Ireland and have not had much time to answer my emails.

I took a copy of the birth entry for John Thomas Caine, Dec 1851, Lonan s of Jane Clarke and John and it is tempting to claim him as mine but I have some doubt. I have never seen his name as John 'Thomas' other than once and his marriage certificate gives his age as 22 in January 1875. The John Thomas Caine you refer to would, if the baptism certificate is correct, have been 24 in that year. On census returns, other than one which says Ramsey, his place of birth is given as IOM. Something may turn up to prove them as one and the same, I'll keep looking. Thanks for your help.
