re - the spelling / pronunciation of your
Grandfather's Christian name does it mean he
probably pronounced it Lewis [like the Scottish island ] ?
R L Stevenson is usually referred to with his
Christian names in full with Louis as in French--
as indeed it is spelt . HOWEVER i have been assured
by several Scottish scholars that he & his family
pronounced it as the island. In those days no one
argued with the teacher who would do his best to
record it as it sounded to him. Now to start school it
is " Birth Certificate , please. "
