Thankyou Mary, my grandfather is listed in the 1881 census as Louis Henry Jones, a 10 year old boarder in the house of Wm and Elizabeth Cowel of Drumgold st, Brian Lawson couldn't find him in the 1871 census, I seem to recall his birthday as being about Oct. He later took the name of Cowell and married in Bolton in 1897 as louis Henry Cowell. I have no idea if Jones was his mother or fathers name.
In the school committee of Douglas minutes of attendance 1885-1890 there is an entry dated 24 3 1885 relating to Lewis Cowell of St Georges School, father John Cowell of 22 Barrack st, His name was sometimes spelled lewis and Wm Cowell who brought him up had a son John and there doesn't seem to be another Louis Cowell in the school records
