Thanks Lois Ralph for filling me in on the descendants of Thomas Radcliff (1773-1834) of Warrensville, Ohio. And thanks Sue Pederson for showing his ancestors back to Gilbert Radcliffe. So it turns out that my great grandmother Margaret Garrett Penty (1840-1907) was the SIXTH cousin of Mary Radcliffe (1839-1884) who married on Jan. 22, 1963 George Washington Penty (1836-1926) , the first cousin of my great grandfather Thomas Penty (1820-1885). They were descended from the 2 sons of Gilbert Radcliffe (d. 1668). Mary backwards to John, to Thomas, to Thomas, to Philip, to John, to John, to Gilbert. Maggie backwards to Catharine Radcliffe Garrett, to William Radcliffe, to Richard, to Richard (Billy Dick), to John, to James, to Gilbert. I doubt that they even knew the details of their relationship!!! Amazingly 6 generations later they were only 1 year apart in age.
Now I have another question about a Penty-Radcliffe relationship. In some family records I found a reference to an Alexander H. Radcliffe (1818-1875) in Cleveland who was buried in a cemetery plot transferred from my great grandfather Thomas Penty. So I am curious as to who his forbears were and whether he had any relationship to my great grandmother. In the Cuyahoga County archives I also found a will for an Alexander S. Penty (1821-1867).
As forMaggie's first husband, James Kneen, Lois' suggestion that this may have been James Kneen, born Andreas 3/19/1823 seems a good possibility. Perhaps she liked older men!!! She was only 17 when she married James in Cleveland and the suggested James was 17 years older than she, while Thomas was 20 years older with a slew of kids from his first marriage (and they had 5 more).
