Thomas Radcliffe of Warrensville

My great grandmother, Margaret Elizabeth (Maggie) Garrett, was the granddaughter of William Radcliff (1775-1849) who is identified by Constance Radcliff as the Andreas Parish Sumner. Her mother was Catherine Radcliff (1800-?) who married Thomas Garrett in 1821. Maggie was born Aug. 9 1840 in Liverpool where her 5 siblings were also born. I haven’t been able to figure out which of several Thomas Garretts in the I.G.I. was my great great grandfather. He apparently died in the 1840s in Liverpool (perhaps in the cholera epidemic), for Catherine returned to Andreas and married John Kelley in 1850. In 1863 Maggie married my great grandfather, Thomas Penty, in Cleveland. She had previously married James Kneen in 1858 in Cleveland (at the age of 17). He was probably the James Kneen born in Andreas in 1833, and I assume he had died. Any information anyone has about either Thomas Garrett or James Kneen would be much appreciated.

Interestingly, Thomas’ first cousin, George Washington Penty (1836-1926), also married a Radcliff. This was Mary Radcliffe (1839-1884). His father, Richard Penty, had a farm on Fairmount Blvd. (now Cleveland Heights, then Warrensville) on the northeast edge of the Shaker colony. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Radcliffe, an early settler of Warrensville who gave the land for the Radcliffe School from his 100 acres of Lot #25. This information is from Vol 18 #1 (Jan.-Mar. 1993) of the East Cuyahoga County Genealogy Society Newsletter SPEAKING RELATIVELY. It is entitled History of the Radcliffe School District (apparently written in 1908), and it says that Thomas Radcliffe was already a resident in 1829 and that he bought his land from William Kelley from IOM. The article states that in 1908 this land was still owned by Thomas’ descendants: Catherine Radcliffe Corlett, Margaret Radcliffe Hecker, and the 3 sons of Mary Radcliffe Penty (William, John, George). So I am very curious as to whether anyone knows when Thomas Radcliffe came to Ohio and where and who his ancestors were on the Isle of Man. I wonder if he and his daughter were any kind of relation to my great grandmother???
