When I was doing some research at the Manx Museum library, my allotment was the amount of time it took for my family to tour the rest of the museum. I used a digital camera to photograph pages that were of interest, and study them later. It wasn't particularly useful for specific research. However, it might be a way to spread the effort around in small batches via email.
In addition, taking a photo would be less damaging to fragile documents than placement on a scanner. I didn't use a flash and it didn't appear to bother anyone else in the library.
Proofreading of the first few transcriptions from those of us not on the island would be necessary to ensure the overall quality.
