Patrick Howland (1703-1785) married Margaret Kneale in 1732. Their only son, Ewan (1737-1800) married Margaret Joughin in Andreas in 1771 but seems to have had an illegitimate son, Patrick, with Margaret Christian in 1769 (baptised at Bride).

Ewan and Margaret had five children including William (1774-1833) and John senior (1777-1849).

The first Patrick was, according to the 1732 marriage contract, the son of Patrick Howland and Elizabeth Sayle.
