Thanks for all this Sue - some great leads to follow up. I've already got a note of the reference for William's 1833 will - they've got the film at the London Family History Centre so I'm planning to look at it when I'm at Kew next week.

Ewan HOWLAND and Margaret (née JOUGHIN) were the parents of the older John HOWLAND (1777-1849) and therefore, potentially, the grandparents of my William (ca.1813-1892).

Incidentally, the older William's widow (Margaret née GARRETT) is living at Lowdas/Leodest in 1841 with her second husband, John QUIRK. My William and Mary didn't move into Loudas until sometime in the 1840s. When their son Charles (my ancestor) was baptised in 1843, William was described as a labourer but by the time the next child (Robert John) was baptised in 1845, William was a farmer. In 1848 when Thomas was baptised, William is specifically noted as 'Farmer, Leodist'.

William is listed as a farmer in the 1841 census. He and Mary were at 'Close Sayle' - I'm not sure exactly where this was but it appears in the census in between the TEARs at Ballacuner and the CORMODEs at Old Croft.
