something doesn't sound right - family states a 'sailor' but settles as a farmer relatively young, it seems as soon as he entered USA almost as far as you can get from water (let alone an ocean) in Minnesota more usually a home of the Scandinavians than Manx - also close to Canada so could have entered from there

Possibly his father was a Manx sailor with his birth in England (? illegitimate?)
