Good question!
My great-grandmother Phyllis Shimmin (Mrs D D Lynch) was not editor of the magazine, she inherited through her father Philip Teare Shimmin the actually physical chair in which Hugh sat at The Porcupine. God knows how.
Philip Teare Shimmin had a sister called Janet Maude who later had three husbands and whose descendents did live in London and Suffolk. But their father Philip, the farmer from Maughold, went briefly to Australia with his brother Robert in some sort of gold rush. Philip's wife Sarah Teare followed with the children, but returned to Liverpool after only a year or so and bringing the children with her. She died a 'widow' as far as we all knew. Well, Philip did not die, he stayed in Melbourne and farmed at Albert Park (claiming to be a widower), married again and had lots of daughters before being buried in Brighton Cemetery. The Liverpool side of the family appears to have been entirely unaware of all this!
So....as a slightly older had at this, can you see how we are related?
Best, Andy MacKay
