Have you got birth and marriage certificates that take you back, hand over hand as it were, from yourself, your parents etc to Benjamin Franklin snr? Also if someone was born in 1842 you could probably find them with their parents in the 1850 and later censuses, but although I'm no expert, I would think that following the certs would be your safest bet.
