Re: Will transcripts
In Response To: Re: Tyldesleys of the Friary ()

Hi Robert,

Several years ago Brian Lawson put an index to IOM wills on his website, with the plan that eventually every will/decree would be transcribed by the many users of his indexes. (His other indexes include burials, births, marriages, and censuses, now on the IOMFHS website.)

Before he published his wills index online those of us overseas who wanted to find out whether there was a will for someone had to look up the hand-written indexes to Arch & Epis wills on LDS film - parish by parish and date by date - a very slow process, and these are the films Brian used for his index. They have a few gaps which have been filled by lists obtainable in the MM, and which hopefully one day will be added to Brian's index by someone with access to the MM.

Many people have been very generous with their time and efforts, and there are now thousands of will transcripts attached to the index. Please see: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/wills/_will_index.html
Brian was still adding will transcripts until a few days before he died last year, after having transferred all his indexes to the FHS website.

Since then Ian Radcliffe has been publishing new transcripts so that people don't stop sending them, and now has them linked to the main wills list: members.lycos.co.uk/ijradcliffe/
So I asked whether you would add your transcripts to these? [Ian's address last message.] You mentioned that you had an interesting will. Brian asked everyone to put them in the same lines as the original if possible because it is helpful for later corrections if necessary, but don't worry about this if you no longer have the will photocopies.

Thanks,
Sue
