Thanks for your help thus far, I now have a copy of Shining By The Sea and am beginning a "thorough" read on a lazy but hopefully sunny bank holiday! Richard Waring is indeed mentioned on Page 208 as one of two letter carriers for the Post Office in 1871.

Still looking for a copy of"Mail of Mann" to see if there are any other references .
