Re: John & Eliz GELLING in Douglas 1841

Hi Eric:

I have looked at the 1841 census until I went cross-eyed! I cannot make out the occupation of Elizabeth Oates is "Coufr" neither. Given up for now but will keep looking until the penny drops!

Re Eliz Kissack, I would say her age given there is definitely 10 because if you look immediately below Eliz and Jane Oates, that is definitely 2 (25) and the 1 in 10 is not a 2 - if you know what I mean!

Who would you say is the "Head" in the household of E. Oates? There is not a lot of difference in their ages which range from 15 to 30, none really old enough to be a parent of any of the others there. What do think was the setup? Jane is probably Elizabeth's sister? Thos and Margaret Jones are married and from England. James and Cath Kneale are also married. They are probably lodgers? I checked on the following page but that is next door.

I am becoming convinced that John Gelling and Elizabeth Oates as per your posting Sept 26 at 10.29 a.m. are the parents of William.

In your posting Eric of Sept 26 at 6.50 p.m. your #1 gives a daughter Elizabeth Margaret and sons William and John, the details fit.

The only way of course to settle this is to obtain some documents i.e. will(s) to confirm one way or another.
