Hi Eric: I have had another look at the 1841 census at St. Georges Street, Douglas, and I don't know whether you noticed that immediately below John and Elizabeth Gelling (both 70) Thos. Craine, and Elizabeth Kissack (looks like she could also be 10 the same as Thomas). There is an Elizabeth Oates, age given as 15, which could of course be anything from 10 to 20 - just to confuse things further. It looks like a different household but a Gelling family next to an Oates, is this more than a coincidence? This EO may not have anything to do with this particularly Gelling family but looks interesting nevertheless.
