A book has just come into my possession called "The Lordship of Man Under the Stanleys - Government and Economy of the Isle of Man 1580-1704" by J R (Roger) Dickinson. Published in 1996 jointly for the Centre of Manx Studies and The Chetham Society by the Carnegie Publishing Ltd. Preston, Lancs, England. ISBN 1-85936-052-1
Apparently copies can be purchased from the Manx National Heritage Shop.
I have yet to read it, but on scanning through it, it seems to be well researched, contains many references to families of this period, plus gives valuable insight into the society of the day. It is backed up by many Appendices and a good bibliography. I see Nigel was one of the author's advisors. It seesm Dickinson had access to many relevant documents including those of Knowsley plus other repositories in Douglas, Lancashire, Cheshire, London and elsewhere.
Any comment on this publication Nigel or Frances? Is Roger Dickinson still with the Centre of Manx Studies as it states that he is/was (back in late 1990s) working on research on Manx crimes and litigation 1550-1700. Did this come into print? Are there any other works by Dickinson for this early period?
