Re: John Corkill (b. 1716; d. 1795)

Going all the way back to my very first post on William, which in part said “I am trying to determine the father William Corkill (of Braddan), who married Alice Cannon (of Onchan) on 6 October 1739. It looks like their children were born over the time span from 1740 to 1758. So, I assume he must have been born between 1710 and 1725. The logical choices for his baptism record would be: William Corkill born to Thomas in Braddan 15-7-1694, William Corkill born to William in Braddan 26-2-1710, or William Corkill born to Finlo in Onchan 31-3-1717.”

If for the moment I turn my attention to William Corkill born to Thomas in Braddan 15-7-1694, there is a marriage record in Manx Notebook/Familysearch for Thomas Corkill to Margaret Crain in Braddan on 21 Oct 1690.

This meshes well with baptism records on familysearch to a Thomas Corkill for: Catherine (bptz. 17 Oct 1691), William (bptz. 15 July 1694), Esther (bptz. 8 Apr 1697), Thomas (bptz. 25 Mar 1703), Margaret (bptz. 25 Mar 1704), Richard (bptz. 16 Feb 1706), Mary (bptz. 14 Aug 1707), and Mary (bptz. 12 Feb 1709).

Note: There is also a Thomas married to a Katherine at the same time that could account for some of the abovementioned children.

The name Esther, which I think is unusual for Corkills, and often written Hester, appears in the 1711 Braddan will of Thomas Corkill, along with the abovementioned Margaret and Mary. It also mentioned a Jony Corkill and makes mention of a son and heir, but not by name.

I guess this represents another option for linking my William to the William Corkill (d. 1700) and Margaret Lewney (d. 1705) family. The 1705 will for Margaret does mention a son (“ Item to her son Thomas the half of the mutton that was betwixt her self and the said Thomas with her blessing.)
