John McDonald’s birthplace given in 1881 as Strathton (Ancestry’s transcription), Ayrshire, but I can’t find such a place.
Bearing in mind that he was in his late 30s when he married Elizabeth Wood, could he have been a widower----possibly with a wife and children in 1861 ?
