CORKILL family, Ballagorry Mooar, Maughold
In Response To: Re: Louisa Cork(h)ill ()

Hi Colin,

I noticed your request for information in the IoM FHS Journal last year, and assumed you had sent that in to them before I answered your message on this board in March. But recently, when I was looking up Corkills to answer messages in a long thread about (different) Corkills of Ballajora, Maughold, I realised that in March I had gone back only as far as John son of Thomas Corkill & Margaret Creech bapt.8 Oct 1820, and John’s family and children, plus the censuses.
This was at:
www.isle-of-man.com/genealogy/messageboard/index.pl/md/read/id/552488

[To see this link, as well as those given for the wills below, highlight it then click on it, or click on it while holding down the Ctrl key.]

If you have kept reading the board messages you will have seen how difficult the Corkills are to sort out, because of the numerous families of them in all parishes at least up until the 1800s, and the same forenames being used in many families, and not helped by the number of Corkills who married other Corkills, related and unrelated.

The ancestors of Thomas Corkill (bapt.13 April 1783; buried 14 Mar 1860) and his son John Corkill (bapt.8 Oct 1820; d.21 Mar.1894) came from the farmland Ballagorry Mooar, now known as Creg na molt, Maughold.
They were easily confused with the several Corkill families who lived at Ballagorry Beg, nearby.

Constance and William Radcliffe who wrote about the farming families in their book A History of Kirk Maughold said that in Ballagorry Mooar a succession of John and William Corkills were entered as landowners. John and William Corkill were entered for half the property in 1643, and in 1703 John alone was entered. The other half of Ballagorry Mooar was held by William and Robert KERRUISH (or KERRISH), until Robert exchanged his part for an area of equal size in Glen Vullin (“the Mill Glen”).

John Corkill, who was entered for Ballagorry Mooar in 1703, was probably bapt. Maughold 2 June 1667, the son of William Corkill (who presumably was the son of the original John). A Will Corkill who had a son John was buried in Maughold 22 Feb.1676.
See his will at: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/LawsonBMD/twill/1676_011.html
- But please note that there are other William Corkill Maughold wills during the 1600s and early 1700s, not yet transcribed, and a Will CORKILL, Moare, was buried 5 April 1705.
However the 1691 Maughold Composition Book has “29. Jon Corkill formerly Jon and Wm Corkill”, so William must have died before this date.

The Transcript of Manor Rolls 1643-1700 [LDS film no.0106649] has under Maughold:
Corna-more
John Corkill for near the other halfe quarter of 18s 4d compounded for in the year 1643 by Jo. Corkill and Wm Corkill fine then was ….. [black] 15s Lives Expired so too pay now: ---- 00 : 15 : 00

Further down this page (69), still at the Treen of Corna-more (which included Ballagorry Mooar), there is a reference to “Don [Dan] Keruish and his sister Margt Corteene and her children for the remainder of the said half quarter compounded for in 1643 by Wm Corteene …”
I include this because of the marriage of the heir of Ballagorry Mooar John Corkill to Jane Kerruish, daughter of Daniel Kerruish [d.1716] & Ann COWLE [d.1702], then of Glen Vullin. Margaret Corteen was married to his elder brother John Kerruish, and their father was the Robert Kerruish mentioned above as previously owning the other half of Ballagorry Mooar.

This is the family so far as I have sorted it out. (All parish records are from Maughold unless otherwise stated).
Direct line names are in bold.

He married c.1697 Jane KERRUISH who was bapt.2 Aug.1674, eldest daughter of Daniel Kerrish d.15 June 1716 [will] & Ann COWLE buried 17 Jan.1702/3, of Glen Vullin, Maughold.

In 1798, seven children were living, with only two being over the age of 14: “his seven Children namely John, William, Thomas, Peter, Christopher, Jane and Margaret Corkill Co-administrators of all and singular his Goods Chattels and Effects movable and immovable whatever, who being all under age except John and William….”. In 1823 “John, William, Thomas, Christopher, Jane, and Margaret” were co-administrators of their mother’s effects, Peter having died?
Four other children died young: Margaret b & d 1772; Jane died the day after her baptism in 1774; Anne b.1775-d.1786?; Thomas 1781-1782.

3.iv. Isabel CORKILL bapt.11 Nov 1740, d.1821, left a marvellous will written June 1814 [1821 Lezayre no.48 Arch 0106243] which not only named her siblings and their children, but her Kerruish cousins as well, which confirmed that all were placed in the correct family.
Her will and attachments included Peter Corkill Senr, Peter Corkill Junr, John Corkill (these 3 were husband and sons of deceased sister Jane); Thomas Corkill, John Corkill, William Corkill, Christopher Corkill, Jane Corkill Senr, Jane Corkill Junr, & Margaret Corkill (wife and children of her brother John), of the parish of Kk Maughold being the next of kin of Isabella Corkill deceased ---- to appear – petition of sd Betty Tellit 25 March 1821.
She left mainly one or two guineas “Unto my two nephews Peter Corkill & John Corkill sons of my sister Jane Corkill.. unto my two nieces (daurs of my brother) namely Jane Corkill & Margt Corkill.. unto Cath Corkill daur of my nephew William Corkill.” [Cath underage.]
“Unto Ellinor Kerruish and Ann Kerruish of Ramsey and Cath Kerruish of Liverpool three sisters my cousins the several sums of £2–2/- Brit each.”
John Kissack husband of Anne Kissack als Kerruish received her legacy in 1822. John Kissack and Ann Kerruish married in Maughold 5 Nov 1815, and the only family in Ramsey or Maughold of the right age who had three daughters of those names were the children of John Kerruish and Dorothy Christian of Booilevent who married 31 Jan 1775: children Ann [bapt.Maughold] Parish Church 28 Dec 1776 [died young?]; Ellinor 24 Mar 1779; William 24 Mar 1781; Ann 17 Jun 1784; Cath 30 Oct 1787.
M.I.: P13. In memory of CATHERINE KERRUISH late of Liverpool who died March 1st 1864 aged 72 yrs.

John Kerruish of Booilevent who married Dorothy Christian was the son of Robert Kerruish (and the brother of Barbara Corkill als Kerruish), who moved to Booilevent from Cardle with his wife Ann Costen. So his son John Kerruish was 1st cousin to Isabel Corkill, and his three daughters in her will were her 1st cousins once removed.

Similarly if anyone spots errors please point them out. I have photocopies from LDS film of the land records I quoted, and Frances Coakley has many more summarised on her Manx Notebook CD.
